SD HC Memory Card Speeds

What is the difference between Class 4 and Class 10 SD HC Memory Card speeds ? I just copied a 3G image using Win32DiskImager to two 16G SD HC cards one Class 4 and the other Class 10 (but labelled 30MB/s) both from ASDA.

The speeds / times were as follows

  • 16G C4 averaged ~ 4MB/s and took ~10 mins
  • 16G C10 averaged ~ 10MB/s and took ~4 mins

So maybe it really is worth paying twice the price for 2.5 times the speed !

PhotoRec & TestDisk file undelete

PhotoRec & TestDisk file recovery and FAT, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS undelete programs allow you recover accidentally deleted photos, videos or other files on SD cards and most other digital camera media and memory.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery program! It was primarily designed to recover lost partitions, repair FAT/NTFS boot sector, NTFS MFT and Ext2/Ext3 superblock and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software or human error (such as accidentally deleting your Partition Table).

Secure Digital SD memory cards speeds

Are you confused about secure digital SD memory cards speeds ? As far as I can tell

Type : Speed : X

I = 6MB = 40X
II = 12MB = 80X
III = 20MB = 133X
IV = 40MB = 266X

You can buy SD cards from ByteStor, Crucial, Kingston, Lexar but make sure you check the speed first if you need a particular speed such as 10MB (as my digital camera does) !
