according to red hat you can only install from http://www.xfce.org/download

but if you add the fedoraproject EPEL repo you can install xfce desktop onto oracle linux 7 (and red hat ?)

# wget https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-7.noarch.rpm
# yum install epel-release-latest-7.noarch.rpm
# yum groupinstall xfce

then logout click options and choose xfce session instead of gnome and login

# yum repolist

Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) is freely re-distributable !

Oracle Enterprise Linux (and Oracle VM) is freely RE-distributable !

Yes, it's free download but also free to re-distribute including copyrights and trademarks, see the EULA for more details.

And theres now a public yum server for OEL that offers a free and convenient way to install packages from the Enterprise Linux and Oracle VM installation media via a yum client.

CentOS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 5 isn’t there yet !

I have just tried CentOS 5 and am a bit disappointed

  1. The LIVE-CD gives me a blank screen on my IBM Thinkpad
  2. The INSTALL-DVD still doesn't have a graphical installer
  3. I asked for a desktop build and (unless I misread something) its only created a root user and I first have to log in as that

I'm afraid I'm going to stick with gNewSense & Xubuntu for the moment at least for my desktops and notebooks !

I've just rebooted (# reboot) my MEMSET server logged back in and entered

# uname -a

Does this reference to 'xen-friendly' actually mean that I have finally found a true XEN VPS VM webhost provider ?

MEMSET does ruby

Not by default BUT because MEMSET use CentOS and therefore yum you can just login as root to your MEMSET VM and run:

$ yum install ruby

$ ruby –version

ruby 1.8.5 (2006-08-25) [i386-linux]

So far MEMSET is turning out to be the most flexible VPS VM webhosting solution I've ever seen !

MEMSET virtual web hosting

I'm now trying MEMSET virtual web hosting and its looking very good so far.

WHM/CPANEL has changed (improved) a lot since I last used it two years ago (when I defected to Plesk).

Not only does the MEMSET reseller package give you ssh root access to your VM you also get ability to update Fantastico yourself and update key system packages such as wget !

If fact the very first thing you have do using WHM (and by ssh as root) is update wget

# rpm -qa wget ;
# wget ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/fedora/core/5/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/wget-1.10.2-3.2.1.i386.rpm ;
# rpm -e wget ;
# rpm -ivh --force wget-1.10.2-3.2.1.i386.rpm ;
# rpm -qa wget ;

and then update Fantastico !

Not for VM webhost beginners then but power equals complexity !
